The eyes of over a billion people from over 200 territories will be focused on SW19 next month as the Wimbledon Tennis Championships  take place from 27th June – 10th July at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Church Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 5AE

Qualifying commences on the 20th June with the draw on 24th June and already retailers, bars and restaurants in both Wimbledon and in the village are starting to theme their windows. The Championships always create a buzz with local businesses marking the tournament in a variety of ways.

Love Wimbledon’s big screen, deckchairs and astroturf on The Piazza is always a big draw for tennis fans and local workers catching up on the action during their lunch breaks / after work. Last year BBC breakfast took their red sofa along for some local interviews.

Wimbledon, as the The Championships are more commonly referred to, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world dating back to 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam events (the others being the Australian Open, French Open and US Open) and the only one still played on grass.

Last year’s Grand Slam saw Novak Djokovic take his third men’s singles title and Serena Williams win her sixth ladies singles title, (but she still needs to win a further 4 to beat Navratilova’s total). Alas A-B 24/7’s favourite Andy Murray lost to Roger Federer in the men’s semi final but we’re hoping this year he can go all the way as he did back in 2013, beating Djokovic in straight-sets and becoming the first British champion for 77 years. Watch here.
